Right at the very heart of the Empire: The Consular Roads connected Rome, the capital of the Empire, to its more remote provinces. Retracing them today, in their well-preserved beauty, not only can their clearly visible glorious past be seen, but there is also the incredible richness of landscapes, towns and villages is waiting to be discovered along their traces. This original itinerary will take you along one of the most evocative parts of the Via Aurelia, the main roman connection between Rome, Pisa, and finally Florence. Submerged in the magic of the landscapes in Central Italy, the crossroads between Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. 2 ROME

The marvels of the “eternal city”

  • Guided visit to “Ancient Rome: on the trail of the great fire”, amid the sites of the fabulous origins of Rome: the Colosseum (Colosseo), the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), the Imperial Forums (Fori Imperiali), with an extraordinary and uncommon itinerary.
  • Break for lunch and visit to one of the masterpieces of Italian art: the Basilica di San Pietro, topped by the dome of Michelangelo, the “dome loved by the Romans”. Guided visit inside the Basilica, the Vatican Museums with 100s masterpieces and the marvellous Sistine Chapel.

3 TARQUINIA-CERVETERI

The Magic of the Etruscan Necropolis

  • Departure from Rome in a private minibus, to the Tuscan area the city of Orvieto.
  • Visit two important archaeological sites with remains of the mysterious Etruscan civilisation that thrived in central Italy 3000 years ago: the Necropolis of Tarquinia and Cerveteri, rich in evidence of their immense culture and their extraordinary “modern” civilisation.
  • Lunch in a local restaurant, on the vulcanic lake of Bracciano.
  • Visit the picturesque ‘ghost town’ of Civita di Bagnoregio.

4 ORVIETO

Crossroads of ancient cultures: The ‘Vie Cave’

  • Visit to discover the Vie Cave, an intricate network of streets from the  the Etruscan era, carved out of ‘tufo’ sandstone, between the marvellous villages of Sovana, Sorana and Pitigliano.
  • Tasty lunch in a farm inn, with tasting of local products and wines.
  • Afternoon in Orvieto,  a marvellous ancient city located on a spectacular cliff drop. Guided tour to the famous Cathedral,  a masterpiece of renaissance art with its amazingly beautiful polychrome marble façade and the wonderful frescos of Luca Signorelli. Visit to the historical centre with its medieval streets and papal palaces and the mysterious well  “Pozzo di San Patrizio” an incredible example of civic architecture.

7 FLORENCE

The Italian genius

  • Transfer to Florence.
  • In the morning, from  Piazzale Michelangelo, from where you can admire all of Florence, we will walk through the city and visit the main monuments, avoiding the overcrowded places to show the most characteristic ones: the Cathedral with its incredible Cupola by Brunelleschi, the Baptistery and the spectacular Bell Tower by Giotto, the austere Piazza della Repubblica and the elegant Piazza della Signoria, the characteristic overbuilt bridge, Ponte Vecchio.
  • Visit to the Gallerie dell’Accademia to admire the David, the indisputable masterpiece by Michelangelo.

Life in Rome: Trastevere – End of Tour

  • Return to our departure point Rome from Florence.
  • In the morning  visit to the pitoresque roman “workingclass” neighbourhood of Trastevere, considered the most Roman quarter of Rome, in this neighbourhood you can still perceive a nineteenth century atmosphere thanks to the conservation of its historical context and traditional workshops.
  • Afternoon off  for a last walk through the centre of Rome and to make last minute purchases.
  • Dinner in a refined restaurant in the centre of Rome for a memorable farewell dinner.
