THE ITALIAN GENIUS

Tours that draw inspiration from the immense cultural and artistic production of Italy and from the genius of the Italian People.

An open-skyed museum and a trove of Renaissance treasures, Italy is a place of art and artistic vocation. Thanks to the work of artists like Michelangelo, Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Raffaello, Leonardo da Vinci, Bernini, Palladio and many others, Italy is famous all over the world for its masterpieces. These works of art are not only unique examples of an excellence in artistic technique but also of innovation. Italian masterpieces are the reflection of the amazing people that have radically changed the world because of their vision of “modern” compared to the mode of thought in their time.

Today, their historical legacy is reflected, in works of art, monuments, places, and the landscapes of our times, but also in the behaviour of modern Italians: even today, Italy is a country where genius, individual excellence, innovation and creativity are distinctive characteristics which are appreciated the world over.

We have selected this theme as one of three inspirations for our Itinerary from an infinite number of options. We are honored to be able to offer you tours that will allow you to breathe the magical, creative atmosphere that for centuries has continued to saturate Italy.

The secret of the real “neapolitan” pizza

Often garnished with creative toppings, the famous pizza of Naples is the most loved by Italians and the most diffused in the world. But for the Neapolitans themselves, “real” pizza is a rite—an ancient tradition that the master pizza-makers guard and hand down generation after generation. (more…)

Pompeii: the nightmare, the dream, and the awakening from a centuries-long night

Over in just a few hours, the disaster that buried a city and its inhabitants under the ashes of Vesuvius has preserved priceless treasures, still intact to this day. On the evening of that August 24, one might have asked what tomorrow would bring—but by dawn, the end had already come.

On February 5th in the year 62 AD, the entire Vesuvian region was devastated by a violent earthquake that nearly destroyed the city of Herculaneum and toppled many buildings in Pompeii. That earthquake was a mere omen of the fatal tragedy that befell Pompeii seventeen years later when, unable to diffuse its roiling energy through a crack in the earth’s crust, Vesuvius burst its dam and began to erupt.

It was August 24, 79 AD.

Between myth, reality, love and adventure: Casanova in Venice

“Now the gondola docked; marble steps led into the magnificent, gaily illuminated house of Senator Bragadino …; masked figures flitted up and down the stairs; some paused, curious …. He stepped into the room, where a serious game of cards was in progress. When Casanova entered, everyone murmured his name, like terrified prey, because they had recognized him by the flash of his eyes behind the mask” (from “The Return of Casanova” by Arthur Schnitzler).

Creative genius and christian spirit: precious treasures in the wake of St. Francis of Assisi

Medieval paths lead to the places most loved by St. Francis: the Sanctuary of La Verna, the holiest mountain in the world, and the Basilica of Assisi, one of the oldest gothic buildings in Italy and a sublime expression of the creative genius of Giotto.

The first time I saw Assisi I was in the valley below. It’s an ancient valley in Umbria, the “green heart of Italy,” where golden wheat fields and green woodlands are interspersed by irregular islands of wildflowers, where the reds, blues, yellows, and purples of the petals and the multicolored wings of butterflies flutter beneath a gleaming sky.

Sagrantino wine: an ancient story with a happy ending

Born in the vineyards between the hills, towers, boroughs, and medieval castles of Umbria in the heart of the Italian peninsula, the Sagrantino of Montefalco is the country’s most ancient wine.

With its 14-degree alcohol content and long aging process, this meditation wine has now reached levels of absolute excellence. Ruby red in color, the aromatic Sagrantino offers a medley of flavors that vary from the wild cherry syrup of the underbrush to sweet spices mixed with cacao to hints of vanilla from the wooden barrels where the wine is aged for almost twenty months. Combined with its full body and intoxicating bouquet, the flavors of this special wine undoubtedly provide a taste experience of rare intensity—and many connoisseurs can recognize it on the first sip. Although Sagrantino has graced Italian tables for centuries, its fame knows no bounds. (more…)
